The Life of St. Catherine of Siena
Catherine was the 24th of 25 children in a busy family of cloth dyers in Siena. Strong-willed from the start, she cut off her hair to make clear she would not marry, spent her days caring for the sick and poor, and drew a lively circle of friends who called her "Mamma."
Though she never learned to write until late in life, she dictated hundreds of letters to popes, kings and ordinary people, and boldly urged Pope Gregory XI to return to Rome from Avignon, which he did in 1377. She is a Doctor of the Church and a patron of Italy and Europe. Her best-known line: "Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire."
“Build a cell inside your mind, from which you can never flee.”
