The Life of St. Longinus
Longinus is the Roman centurion who stood at the foot of the Cross. When Jesus died, he looked up and said, "Truly this man was the Son of God," one of the first to recognize Christ in that moment.
Tradition gives him the name Longinus and says he became a Christian and preached the faith. In St. Peter's Basilica, Bernini's towering statue shows him with arms open wide, holding his lance and gazing up at Christ.
