The Life of St. Lucy
Lucy was a young Christian of Syracuse in Sicily who gave her dowry to the poor. Her name means "light." A lovely tradition says she carried food to Christians hiding in the catacombs wearing a wreath of candles on her head so her hands were free.
Her feast on December 13 lights up the darkest days of winter. In Sweden girls in white dresses wear crowns of candles and bring saffron buns at dawn. People with eye troubles have long asked her prayers, and she is named in the First Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass.
