The Life of St. Nicholas
Nicholas was a generous bishop of Myra, in what is now Turkey, who loved to give in secret. The best-known story tells of a poor father with three daughters and no money for their dowries. On three nights Nicholas tossed a bag of gold through their window, and by tradition one landed in a stocking hung by the fire to dry.
Sailors, children and families have loved him ever since. Dutch settlers called him Sinterklaas, and his name became Santa Claus. On the evening of December 5 children in many countries still set out their shoes, hoping to find small gifts from St. Nicholas in the morning.
