The Life of St. Valentine

Valentine was a priest of Rome who gave his life for Christ in the third century. Much loved by the early Church, he was buried along the Via Flaminia, and a church rose over his tomb.

Over the centuries his feast became the day of love. The poet Chaucer linked it with birds choosing their mates, and soon sweethearts were exchanging notes. Today couples pray for his intercession before weddings, and many visit his relics at Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin.
