The Life of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati

Pier Giorgio grew up in a wealthy family in Turin and became the life of every party. He loved mountain climbing, skiing, pipe smoking with friends and practical jokes, and he founded a circle of buddies called the "Society of Shady Characters" who hiked, prayed and laughed together.

Quietly, he gave nearly everything away. He spent his allowance on the poor, gave away his bus fare and ran home, and visited the sick in the worst neighborhoods. When he died of illness at 24 in 1925, his family was amazed to find thousands of poor people at his funeral. A photo of him on a summit carries his motto: Verso l'alto, "to the heights."
